The 2015 Wood Buffalo Western Canada Summer Games is a multi-sport event that provides development opportunities for amateur athletes to help them advance their athletic skills in a competitive, but friendly, environment. After winning the bid in June 2011, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) will be hosting the Western Canada Summer Games from Aug. 7 to 16, 2015.
With 18 sports, the Games will bring over 2,500 athletes and 14,000 guests (including dignitaries, spectators, volunteers, athletes and coaches) to the RMWB. The 10 days of the Games will also include a festival featuring guest artists, musicians, art displays and cultural performances. The magnitude of this event will attract new visitors to RMWB, allowing them to discover the people, the culture, the businesses and the beauty of the northern Boreal forest.
Suncor and the Suncor Energy Foundation (SEF) are key supporters of the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games as part of our commitment to the RMWB, and our community investment strategy focused on fostering sustainable, resilient communities.
The Carry the Spirit Torch Relay, proudly presented by Suncor, kicked off in Fort McKay on May 14, and is visiting the communities of Anzac, Janvier, Conklin and Fort Chipewyan. It will arrive in Fort McMurray on Aug. 3 and will appear in the Games’ opening ceremonies on Aug. 7.
“As a long-standing community partner with deep roots in the region, we are proud to help carry the spirit of the Games to communities across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo,” said Mark Little, executive vice-president, Upstream, Suncor. “The Torch Relay is a great opportunity for all to take an active role in the Games, cheer on the torchbearers and show the rest of Western Canada what the residents of our great local communities are made of.”
Each community stop includes local torchbearers carrying the torch along the route. Community members are encouraged to come out and cheer on the torchbearers before celebrating at a community event. Community events include Games mascot Mistiko, snacks, beverages and giveaways.
“The Carry the Spirit Torch Relay is a great way for the entire region to celebrate together,” said Cindy Amerongen, Director of Culture, Ceremonies and Protocol for the 2015 Wood Buffalo Games Host Society. “We are building excitement with the Torch Relay and cannot wait to see the spirit and energy of residents at each event.”
