North America Onshore

North America Onshore, or NAO, consists primarily of operations and asset holdings in Western Canada, where Suncor explores for, produces and markets natural gas and conventional crude. In addition, Suncor holds assets that could allow the company to eventually explore long-term supply opportunities in northern frontier areas.

Given the vast amount of natural gas brought on-stream in North America by recent advances in shale gas technology, natural gas producers in North America are facing relatively low gas prices with resulting challenges. In light of this environment, Suncor has implemented a strategy to make its operations in this region more profitable. One element of this strategy involves increasing our activities in conventional crude projects. Another element involves assessing how best to increase participation in the unconventional side of the natural gas industry.

As of September 30, 2011, NAO was producing about 400 million cubic feet of natural gas equivalent per day. About 8% of this production is crude oil and liquids.
