Kris Smith assumed the role of senior vice-president, Supply, Trading and Corporate Development in early 2012. In this role Kris is responsible for marketing, logistics and energy trading, as well as corporate strategic planning and development and business transformation.
Kris joined Suncor in 2000 as corporate legal counsel in the General Counsel’s office, where he worked with a variety of business areas and functions including oil sands, international business and major projects. Kris worked in Suncor’s U.S. downstream refining business from 2003 to 2007, during which time he was the general manager, Business Services and Strategic Growth, managing business support services, business development and strategic planning for Suncor’s U.S. business.
Kris joined Suncor’s Oil Sands business in 2007 as general manager, Business Services and was appointed vice-president, Planning and Strategy in 2008. In this role he managed a variety of portfolios including business services, business planning and development, production planning and logistics and maintenance development.
In 2010 Kris became vice-president, Energy and Utilities Oil Sands. In that role he was accountable for the operation of Suncor’s power generation and transmission assets, as well as other utility operations supporting Suncor’s Oil Sands business.
In 2011 Kris was transferred to special strategic projects reporting to the executive vice-president, Oil Sands.
Kris obtained his bachelor of arts with honors from the University of Alberta in 1992, and his bachelor of laws from Dalhousie University in 1995, and is a member of the Alberta and Colorado bars. Prior to joining Suncor Kris worked as a corporate and commercial lawyer at a law firm in Calgary, Alberta.
Kris sits on the boards of directors for the MacDonald Island Park Corporation in Fort McMurray and the Fort McKay Business Incubator.
