Rick George, Past President & CEO

Rick George was appointed president and chief executive officer of Suncor Energy Inc. in 1991.

He was named "Outstanding CEO of the Year" in 1999 after leading a remarkable business turnaround at Suncor, and received the Canadian Business Leader Award in 2000. Rick was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in December 2007 for his leadership in the development of Canada's natural resources sector, for his efforts to provide economic opportunities to Aboriginal communities and for his commitment to sustainable development.

In 2008, he was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame. He was named Canadian Energy Person of the Year in 2011 by the Energy Council of Canada.

In 2011, Rick was elected to the Board of Canadian Pacific Railway. Rick served as chairman of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives from 2003 to 2006 and remains on its board of directors. He was a member of the North American Competitiveness Council (NACC) from 2006 to 2009, and was selected to serve as chair of the Canadian contingent of the NACC in 2008.

Rick was a member of the Calgary Committee to End Homelessness in 2007 and chair of the 2008 Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference.

Originally from Brush, Colorado, Rick spent 10 years with Sun Company both in the U.S. and the U.K. During this time, he held various positions in the areas of project planning, production evaluation, exploration and production, and in the international oil business, the last four of which were spent in the U.K. as managing director of Sun Oil Britain Limited. In 1991 he moved from London, England to lead Suncor Energy Inc.

Rick holds a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Colorado State University, a law degree from the University of Houston Law School and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Program for management development.
