You’ve always been able to drive from coast to coast. But now, you can do it driving an electric vehicle.

We know that Canadians’ fuel needs are evolving, which is why, in 2019, our Petro-Canada business officially opened Canada’s Electric Highway™ - the first-ever coast-to-coast network of EV fast chargers. The network includes sites located in small towns and big cities across Canada.

Spanning 6,300 km, from Halifax, NS to Victoria, BC, Petro-Canada EV fast chargers are located every 250 km or less, in close proximity to the TransCanada Highway. Each station features DC fast chargers with universal CHAdeMO and CCS/SAE connectors (these acronyms will make sense to all you EV drivers out there). The chargers provide maximum power up to 100kW (CHAdeMO) and 350kW at most locations (CCS) – enough to provide an 80 per cent charge or more to most EVs in less than 30 minutes.

“This is another example of Suncor’s leadership in sustainability and our focus on meeting the needs of our customers both today and in the future,” says Kris Smith, Executive Vice President, Downstream.

With the Petro-Canada EV mobile app for iOS  and Android, it’s even easier for users to charge your vehicle. With the EV app you can:

  • Start your charge
  • Pay from your phone
  • Monitor your sessions
  • Search for your next stop and more

The app allows users to locate Petro-Canada EV sites and see charger availability. It also allows users to pay, initiate, monitor and stop their charging session, as well as view their charging and payment history. The app and charger screen are synchronized so customers can view both options simultaneously.

“We are still learning about the emerging EV market and customers in this space. The launch of this app is just one more step in this journey,” says Pat Lazenby, project manager, EVs. “It’s been an interesting first year to understand customer usage, and overall we are seeing consistent use of the stations, including many of the remote locations.”

We anticipate customers’ lower-carbon mobility needs by providing an evolving portfolio of trusted energy alternatives across Canada. Helping Canadians get to where they want to go is what we do, and we’re happy to continue to be part of the journey.
