The Jantzi Social Index, an independent investment research firm that evaluates and monitors the social and environmental performance of approximately 300 companies and income trusts, has consistently recognized Suncor for its performance.

Suncor is also listed on the FTSE4Good Index, a global benchmarking tool used by investors and researchers to measure the performance of environmentally and socially responsible companies.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Suncor has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for 16 consecutive years. The DJSI tracks the financial performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide, based on economic, social and environmental criteria.

Chartered Professional Accountants Canada

Chartered Professional Accountants Canada

The Chartered Professional Accountants Canada, formerly the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, has given Suncor's Report on sustainability its Award of Excellence in sustainability reporting from 2009-2014. In 2013 and 2014, Suncor was also recognized with the Award of Excellence in the Oil and Gas sector for Corporate Reporting for the third time.

Carbon Disclosure Program


Suncor is also a member company of the CDP, an independent not-for-profit organization that records corporate climate change information. Suncor has reported to the CDP since 2004, using it as an opportunity to analyze our greenhouse gas emissions and energy use in a more structured manner and benchmark against a peer group. Measuring and reporting our emissions is part of our seven-point action plan on climate change. The CDP also provides visibility and accountability to stakeholders. Suncor has been named a top reporter by the CDP in many years and most recently for its 2012 data submission. Suncor has also reported to CDP's Water program since 2010.

UN Global Compact 100 Stock Index

The Global Compact 100, released in partnership with research firm Sustainalytics, is composed of a representative group of Global Compact companies that have been selected based on their adherence to the Global Compact’s ten principles as well as evidence of executive leadership commitment and consistent base-line profitability.

Global 100

In 2015, Corporate Knights magazine listed Suncor in its ranking of the world’s 100 most sustainability-focused companies. The Global 100 highlights corporations that have been proactive in managing environmental, social and governance issues.

Progress Aboriginal Relations (PAR) Certification

Since receiving silver-level Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) accreditation in 2014, Suncor has worked to address CCAB's recommendations and has imbedded Aboriginal relations programs across the organization. In 2017, Suncor achieved a Gold level certification. PAR is a certification program that rates corporate Aboriginal relations performance at a Bronze, Silver or Gold level.

Newsweek Green Rankings

In 2016, Suncor was listed in Newsweek’s Green Rankings, one of the world’s foremost corporate environmental rankings. Newsweek magazine ranks the top global 500 companies by market capitalization on corporate sustainability and environmental impact.

Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP)

Suncor was recognized at CAPP's 2014 Responsible Canadian Energy Awards with the President's Award. The award recognized three separate initiatives:

  • Hydrocrabon blanket gas and recovery system
  • Using recycled tailings water as in situ makeup water
  • Social Prosperity Wood Buffalo

The company was also honored by CAPP at its Responsible Canadian Energy Awards in:

  • 2013 – Social Performance Award for the David Thompson Corridor Visitor Services program. A five-year partnership between Suncor and Alberta Parks
  • 2012 – Health and Safety Award for the Leading by Metrics program aimed at minimizing risk of injury on the front line
  • 2010 – President's Award acknowledged two initiatives: the company's TROTM tailings management process and work to complete surface reclamation of its first tailings pond
  • 2007 – President's Award for Suncor's Journey to Zero program which embedded our safety culture into every aspect of the business

Best 50 Corporate Citizens

Suncor was ranked among the best 50 corporate citizens in Canada by Corporate Knights magazine for six years in a row now, from 2010 to 2015. The ranking is based on company performance against environmental, social and governance indicators.

Top 50 Socially Responsible Corporations

For five years in a row, from 2010 to 2015, Suncor was named to the Maclean's/Jantzi-Sustainalytics list of the Top 50 Socially Responsible Corporations in Canada. This listing recognizes leading environmental, social and governance practices of Canada's most prominent corporations.

Mining Association of Canada

In 2016, Suncor received a Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Award for exceeding a Level A ranking in their results across all six protocols of TSM, including: Aboriginal and community outreach, crisis management, safety and health, tailings management, biodiversity conservation management, and energy use and greenhouse gas emissions management.
