The Suncor Community Leisure Centre in Fort McMurray, Alta. first opened its doors 10 years ago.
During the annual Suncor community reception in Wood Buffalo in June, Suncor and the Suncor Energy Foundation (SEF) announced a $1 million donation to the Suncor Community Leisure Centre to ensure its continued contribution to the city’s vibrancy.
For over 10 years, the Suncor Community Leisure Centre in Fort McMurray – the largest recreational, leisure and social centre in Canada – has been a central gathering place for friends, families and local businesses. When its doors opened in 2009, families filled its hallways, swimming pools and ice rinks, and the Centre helped change the face of Fort McMurray from a boomtown to a hometown.
“We all know a healthy community is multi-faceted,” says Shelley Powell, senior vice president at Suncor’s Base Plant. “Vibrant communities include sports, fitness and recreation, and, because the benefits to the community are so great, we’re proud to make this announcement.”
The annual community reception provides an opportunity to engage people in the region and celebrate a partnership over 50 years in the making. Each year, Suncor leaders and community guests gather to connect and learn how Suncor and SEF are contributing to physical, environmental and social wellness in the Wood Buffalo community.
Together, Suncor and SEF have donated more than $67 million to charitable organizations across Wood Buffalo, like the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts, Keyano College, Fuse Social, and the Wood Buffalo Community Foundation, and made a $3 million donation in 2018 to the Gratitude Campaign, a fundraiser in support of the Northern Lights Health Foundation.
