There’s a lot going on in the world right now. While we need to address the challenges we’re currently facing, it’s important that we also take a long-term view and the necessary steps to set us up for success in the future. At Suncor, we continue to do just that through our commitment to sustainability. It’s embedded throughout the company and lives through our purpose – to provide trusted energy that enhances people’s lives, while caring for each other, and the earth.
One way we capture our efforts is through our 2020 Report on Sustainability (ROS) and the Climate Risk and Resilience Report (CRRR), which is available within the Report on Sustainability and as a stand-alone downloadable PDF.
“Our industry, and company, have been faced with a number of challenges in recent years, but through the hard work of many, we’ve making significant progress when it comes to achieving our sustainability goals,” says Jon Mitchell, vice president, sustainability.
Here are a few highlights from the report you don’t want to miss:
The progress we are making on our GHG goal
We continue to make meaningful progress towards our goal of reducing our emissions per barrel by 30% by 2030. Read more about our work on carbon management and moving towards a low-carbon future in the CRRR or Climate change section of the ROS.
How we are working with Indigenous businesses
Did you know that in 2019 we spent more than $836 million, approximately 8% of our total supply chain spend for the year, with Indigenous businesses and worked with 88 Indigenous suppliers? Read more around our how we’re partnering with Indigenous businesses and communities as part of our social goal.
An increase in the Indigenous Mentorship Program and Journeys
Our Indigenous Mentorship Program has increased by 50% since 2018 and Journeys, our Indigenous employee inclusion network, now has more than 800 Indigenous and non-Indigenous members.
The $830 million investment in technology development and deployment in 2019, including our digital transformation
We look at technology development and innovation across our business to reduce our environmental footprint and costs. This includes reducing the GHG emissions associated with our products and operations as well as reducing the land and water impacts associated with our operations. We also engage in conversations with many stakeholders to drive social innovation at Suncor. We define social innovation as any initiative, product, process, program or design that challenges or changes society’s actions and beliefs.
Our commitment to inclusion and diversity and a respectful workplace
We recognize the importance of listening to employees and stakeholders to understand where opportunities exist to progress inclusion and diversity, and to celebrate our successes. Our employee networks and Inclusion and Diversity Council are a few ways we’re working to make Suncor an inclusive place to work.
