Throughout 2021, Suncor employees proved how much they care about their communities to the tune of close to 80,000 hours volunteered and more than $6.8 million donated to community organizations.
“Even though it was a year of unknowns, employees across the company showed their commitment and ingenuity when it came to caring for each other and their communities, ” says Joanne Manser, a senior advisor for the Suncor Energy Foundation and Community Investment team.
Suncor has been tracking employee donations and volunteer time since 2017 through its employee giving program, SunCares.
Causes we care about
Included in the overall $6.8 million, is the amount raised within SunCares for specific humanitarian causes in response to global events and in partnership with Suncor’s employee inclusion networks. In 2021, employees donated more than $200,000 to support causes including:
- Black History Month
- Residential school recoveries across Canada

- Western U.S. wildfires
- B.C. floods
- Support for the people of Afghanistan
#GivingTuesday
To mark #GivingTuesday in 2021, which falls after Black Friday and Cyber Monday as a movement to give back, SunCares offered employees a one-day 200 per cent donation match to donate to any community organization. The response was incredible and employees, combined with the company match, donated a total of $1.46 million in one day.
Throughout the year, SunCares offers employees a 100 per cent donation match to any community organization.
