The Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation has a challenge for you.

From October 19 – November 19, we invite you to join us to raise funds for family caregivers across Canada.

On average, 1 in 4 Canadians spend 19 hours each week providing care for a close friend or family member, also known as family caregiving.

Being a family caregiver includes supporting those who are experiencing significant mental or physical health challenges, but these acts of support don’t come with pre-determined timelines. Many family caregivers provide long-term care, while others are episodic to address an acute health situation.

While each family caregiver faces their own unique set of challenges, we at the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation saw an opportunity where we could provide support. Being a family caregiver can be a challenging role that many step into unexpectedly, to provide critical support often without any training.

Since the Foundation came to life in November 2020, we have collaborated with others in the sector to create innovative new programs, resources and tools that not only amplify the work of charitable organization in Canada but help support family caregivers.

“Caring for those who care for others is the Canadian way, and it’s exactly what is needed to best serve communities across Canada,” says Leila Fenc, Director, Community Relations, Petro-Canada. “We know family caregiving is largely unseen, and we have the ability to shine a light during a time when caring is more essential than ever before.”

The CareMakers Foundation is also committed to creating awareness and understanding of family caregiving and inspiring Canadians to help. This is where you come in.

You can work alone or as part of a team to provide 19 hours of support directly to a family caregiver while collecting pledges from your networks. Don’t know a family caregiver directly? Not to worry, we encourage you to find creative ways to raise awareness of family caregiving and this important cause.
