Suncor Energy Norge AS established an office in Stavanger in 2006. Offshore Norway is an important exploration theatre in Suncor’s Exploration and Production (E&P) Offshore business. The company’s strategic objective is to grow a sustainable exploration and production business in the country. Norway has several world-class basins that offer a wide range of exploration opportunities with significant open acreage which, when combined with regular bid rounds, offers material growth opportunities in the region.
Suncor has established an excellent reputation and track record in Norway. We are participants in three discoveries– the Spirit Energy-operated Oda discovery (previously known as Butch) which commenced production in 2019, the Neptune Energy-operated Fenja discovery and the Equinor Operated-Beta discovery.
The Spirit Energy-operated Oda field was discovered in 2011 and is located 13 kilometres east of the producing Ula field in the southern part of the Norwegian North Sea. Suncor has a 30% participating interest in the Oda field. The Oda field has been developed with a seabed template that ties back to the Ula field. Oil is exported to Ekofisk and onward via Norpipe, the subsea oil and natural gas pipeline system in the North Sea, to the Teesside terminal in the United Kingdom. The subsea tie-in solution provides safe, cost efficient delivery of the field, enabling gross peak oil production of approximately 35,000 barrels per day. Production started in March 2019.
The Neptune Energy-operated Fenja field is located in the Norwegian Sea, 120 km north of Kristiansund, Norway. It was discovered in 2014 and contains recoverable resources of approximately 100 million barrels oil equivalent. In May 2018, Suncor acquired a 17.5% participating interest in the Fenja field. The field will be developed with two subsea templates with six wells (three oil producers, two water injectors and one a gas injector) tied back to the Equinor operated Njord platform. This drilling program will be carried out in three phases over the next two years, with first oil anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Norwegian Petroleum Production Licenses
An important element of our organic growth strategy in Norway is participation in annual offshore exploration licensing rounds; we maintain an active portfolio of operated and non-operated licences with a focus on quality.
See the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate website for information on Suncor Energy Norge AS’s production licenses in Norway.
The Beta Field was discovered in 2010, development concept selection and schedule is currently under review by licence participants. Suncor has a 20% participating interest in the Beta field.
Suncor Energy Norge AS is dedicated to delivering economic prosperity, improved social wellbeing and a healthy environment for today and tomorrow for all stakeholders. We remain focused on organically building our capabilities and presence in Norway, where our portfolio allows for sustained activity and provides a platform for future growth and a long-term business presence in Norway.
