Suncor Energy recognized by industry association for commitment to biofuels
CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 22, 2011) - Suncor Energy reported today that it was recently honoured at the 8th Annual Canadian Renewable Fuels Summit in Calgary as the recipient of "The Fuel Change Award 2011". The award recognizes pioneers in the development and commercialization of low carbon renewable fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel in Canada.
Suncor has been making a significant impact in Canada's emerging biofuels industry since 2006 with the opening of its St. Clair Ethanol Plant. Thanks to the support of Agriculture and Agri-food Canada - through their ecoABC program - and Natural Resources Canada - through their ecoENERGY program - an expansion was completed earlier this year that doubled the plant's annual production capacity to 400 million litres. Suncor is now one of the largest ethanol producers in the country and has the largest biofuels plant by volume in Canada.
"With a goal of being among the key producers of renewable energy in Canada, wind power and biofuels are two alternative energy sources that we've been investing in," said Jay Thornton, executive vice-president, Energy Supply, Trading & Development, at the Green Fuels luncheon. "It speaks volumes that the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association has recognized Suncor for its commitment to a sustainable energy future."
Founded in 1984, the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA) is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote the use of renewable fuels for transportation through consumer awareness and government liaison activities. Suncor has been an active member of the CRFA for the past four years and has been working with this group to progress the policy framework for biofuels.
