Suncor Energy helps make roadways safer for motorists
Fort McMurray, Alberta (December 11, 2008) – Suncor Energy is pleased to announce that the new Highway 63 interchange will open on Saturday, December 13 at noon. The interchange, located 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, is designed to improve highway safety in the area during the construction and operation of the company's new Voyageur upgrader, part of its planned $20.6 billion oil sands expansion.
"We wanted to find a way to make highway traffic in the area safer for all motorists," says Kirk Bailey, Suncor Energy Oil Sands vice president. "This new interchange is designed to allow through traffic to maintain the posted speed. Ramp access to and from our site is expected to improve intersection safety. We sincerely thank motorists and businesses in the area for their patience during construction. "
In April of 2008, Suncor and the Province of Alberta announced an agreement for the construction and maintenance of the interchange. Under terms of the agreement, Suncor paid for and constructed the interchange, and transfer to the government is targeted for June 2009.
