Janice Odegaard, Senior V.P., General Counsel, Suncor

Janice Odegaard is senior vice president and general counsel of Suncor Energy. In this role, Janice is responsible for all legal matters across the company and works closely with Suncor’s Board of Directors on matters of corporate governance.

Janice joined Suncor in July 1995 and has held a number of senior positions within the company including vice president, project services in the Major Projects group, which handles engineering, procurement and construction for Suncor’s major capital projects, and vice president, corporate legal affairs. She is also Suncor’s chief privacy officer and corporate secretary. Prior to joining Suncor she practiced corporate and securities law in Calgary. Janice is currently a member of the Calgary and district United Way Cabinet, and co-chaired the professional services division of the 2012 and 2013 campaign.

Janice is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Society of Alberta and the Calgary Bar Association. She is past president of the Calgary Bar Association’s securities section, and served as a member of the board of directors of the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre from 2005 to 2008. In 2005, Janice was elected a director of the Board of the Legal Education Society of Alberta, a non-profit organization that provides continuing education for legal professionals in the province and administers the province’s bar admission program, and served a five-year term that concluded in 2011. She has served on the advisory board of Lilith Professional, an organization that provides mentoring programs for professional women. Janice was named one of the Women’s Executive Network’s (WXN) Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2011 and 2013, and received the 2011 Women in Law Leadership (WILL) Award in the category of government or in-house leadership in the profession.

Janice holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Brandon University and a law degree (LL.B.) from the University of Calgary. She earned numerous academic awards including the Governor General’s Gold Medal.
