As part of Suncor Energy (U.S.A.) Inc.’s 2020 settlement agreement with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), we engaged Kearney – an independent, third-party expert – to investigate the root cause of our past emissions exceedances and identify refinery improvement opportunities. Based on these findings and recommendations, we developed an Improvement Plan that highlights what we have done so far and what we plan to do. It has two parts: 1) Implementation Plan for actions required by the settlement agreement with CDPHE; and 2) Voluntary Measures that are additional actions we are taking in response to Kearney’s other recommendations.
CDPHE approved our Implementation Plan on May 20, 2021, with minor modifications, most importantly, moving up the completion date for our Plant 2 upgrades to the end of 2022.
We are confident that this plan will improve our operations and enable us to more fully live our purpose to provide trusted energy that enhances people's lives while caring for each other and the earth.
As part of our journey to improve our performance at the Commerce City Refinery, we have developed a Spotlight Series. This series will highlight stories that demonstrate the progress we have made to improve our performance and communications to ultimately become a better neighbor and regain the community’s trust.
In the coming months, we will continue to share regular updates focused on improving the refinery’s safety, reliability, culture and training as we work to implement both the required and voluntary actions from the Improvement Plan that we shared with the community in April 2021.
