The Suncor Sun Riders are gearing up for the 2025 Tour Alberta for Cancer (TAfC), with this year's fundraising ride being Suncor’s first as an official sponsor.

Over the past 13 years of participation, cyclists and virtual participants from Suncor have raised an incredible $1.25 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, the funding partner for all cancer care and research in the province. The funds directly benefit Alberta’s cancer centres and support groundbreaking clinical trials, innovative treatments and enhanced patient care.

“The additional investment from Suncor as a new Northern Lights sponsor will amplify our impact and further help countless Albertans facing cancer,” says Rodney Guest, Sun Riders co-captain. “We’re more excited than ever about this year’s ride and invite anyone interested in riding, volunteering or donating to get involved.”

Suncor is well represented by riders across Alberta, including Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray. Over 65 Sun Riders have already signed up for this year’s TAfC and have raised over $50,000 so far, with a goal of $175,000.

Like so many Canadians affected by cancer, Sun Riders cyclists each have their own reasons for why they ride.

“While undergoing screening to donate a kidney to my wife in 2011, doctors discovered a large tumor in my stomach. I subsequently underwent a complete gastrectomy and partial esophagectomy,” says Jamie Woods. “Since then, I’ve taken part in 12 rides because I still can. I do it every year for those who can’t.”

“I ride for a dear family friend, Martha Pook, who we lost to cancer, and for my grandmother, Joan Olanski, who inspired me with her strength and positivity during her recent fight with breast cancer,” says Amanda Mitchell. “I also ride for a brighter future with more research and a hope that fewer people will be impacted by this terrible disease.”

The event takes place July 19 to 20 in Strathmore, Alberta and offers multiple distances for all levels of riders. The course includes numerous pit stops providing hydration, nutrition, rest areas, and bike maintenance.

The post-ride festivities feature food, beverages and activities, and Suncor’s sponsorship team is busy planning something exciting for this year’s participants.
