Located in the new Suncor Energy Diagnostic Imaging Unit, Alberta’s first photon-counting CT scanner is now ready for use, giving care teams clearer images, faster results and new ways to support patients.
First announced in October 2025, the scanner will improve cardiac, neurology and pediatric care for patients across Alberta and western Canada. With higher image resolution, faster scan times and reduced radiation exposure, physicians can make clearer, more informed decisions.
For patients who require frequent imaging, including those undergoing cancer treatment or requiring ongoing monitoring, the reduced radiation exposure is especially meaningful, supporting safer care over time. Faster scans can also ease the experience for pediatric patients, reducing stress for children and their families.
As the technology is integrated into regular care, it is expected to support earlier detection, faster diagnoses and a better overall patient experience, reducing wait times and improving patient flow.
“We are proud to support the University Hospital Foundation and to now see this technology in place,” says Troy Little, Chief Financial Officer at Suncor. “By investing in this next-generation scanner, we are helping ensure patients and health-care teams have access to the tools they need for faster and more accurate diagnoses and improved care.”
The introduction of this technology marks an important step forward in diagnostic imaging. Now, patients and families can experience the benefits firsthand with more detailed images from every scan, making sure ‘the future of care is clear.’
