Journey of Reconciliation: the evolution of our social goal
In 2015, when Suncor launched its first long-term social goal, recognizing the importance of building authentic relationships with Indigenous Peoples, we committed to updating the goal as we learned and grew. After years of progress, learning and realizations that there is still much work ahead of us, we took the time to reflect on that goal. Beginning in 2019, we asked our employees, Indigenous communities and partners for their thoughts and feedback about the social goal. Based on what we heard, we have evolved the social goal into the Journey of Reconciliation, acknowledging that we are on a continual journey with no end.
Through the Journey of Reconciliation, we are progressing the way we think and act to build mutual trust and respect with Indigenous Peoples. Our Journey of Reconciliation reflects a deep commitment to continue to learn through an Indigenous lens, have new conversations and be open to new perspectives. We will measure our progress with a holistic approach that includes numerical metrics as well as storytelling to help us understand the impact of this work.
Our work in this journey is shaped by four areas of focus:
• Valuing Indigenous worldviews begins with developing an understanding of the rich culture and history of Indigenous Peoples through training and experiential learning opportunities, but it is deeper than that. It is also about listening to Indigenous perspectives and reflecting Indigenous knowledge in what we do, where appropriate.
• Partnering with Indigenous businesses and communities starts with honest and respectful relationship building to understand common interests and mutual benefit. We know communities have different priorities and we will take the time to listen and understand what they are.
• Strengthening Indigenous workforce and inclusion represents a continued focus on hiring, retention and advancement of Indigenous employees across our business while creating a safe and equitable workplace where Indigenous employees want to work and can build meaningful careers.
• Partnering with Indigenous youth is about making impactful connections that support young leaders and provide learning opportunities for Suncor. Today’s young leaders are the future. We value the insightful knowledge they bring and the power of their voices.
We believe we can make a difference by looking at opportunities across our business, encouraging a mindset of openness and collaboration, and inspiring our employees to be curious, learn and grow.
The path forward
Suncor’s Journey of Reconciliation reflects our continued transformation both within the organization and in relationships with Indigenous Peoples. It’s a journey that will require hard work and some uncomfortable reflections, but a necessary one. It will require us to further foster a culture of inclusion, humility, honesty and a willingness to shift our mindsets and behaviours. Based on what we learn along the way, we are open and willing to change our approach.
There is much work ahead of us, and through collaboration with industry partners, we know we can move in the right direction together. This is not the work of a small group in Suncor. This is the work of all of us.
