“Whether it was equipment capacity or standard operating limits, we looked at what it would take to unlock throughput and maximize our diesel production while maintaining fuel quality,” says Kris.
That mindset is paying off. By the end of 2025, the refinery surpassed its long-standing diesel production ceiling, increasing diesel yield by 16,000 barrels per day, and still has opportunity for further growth.
Recently, the refinery executed one of its most cost-effective diesel optimization programs ever, notes Bill Van Beek, refinery vice-president. From frontline ideas to equipment upgrades and process improvements, teams across operations, logistics, supply and trading worked together to make it happen.
“Diesel is essential to everyday life and the economy, fuelling the trucks that deliver groceries and goods to store shelves, powering equipment at construction sites and mines and supporting important industries such as forestry and agriculture across Canada,” says Bill. “Increasing our diesel output strengthens made-in-Canada domestic supply and helps meet demand in global markets.”
A critical step was expanding Suncor’s logistics network, including increasing export capacity at our Burrard Terminal in B.C. and adding rail capability to move diesel east from Alberta to a Suncor export facility in Quebec. Together, these outlets provide market access from both coasts and give the refinery greater flexibility to move every incremental barrel.
