• Standout operating performance leads to 10 per cent increase in Suncor’s refining capacity
  • All refineries formally re-rated to a total capacity of 511,000 barrels per day in 2026
  • Operational improvements helping produce more fuel for customers in more markets

Fuel supply matters to everyone who depends on it – and Suncor is delivering more of it by getting more out of our existing refining operations. Across Edmonton, Sarnia, Montreal and Commerce City (Colorado), standout operating performance enabled our teams to safely push these assets beyond their previous rated capacity.

That performance led to the re-rating of our refineries in 2026, increasing total refining capacity by 10 per cent, from 466,000 to 511,000 barrels per day.

The result is more gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other products reaching the people and markets that need them in Canada, the U.S. and beyond. Suncor now supplies refined products to 45 countries, up from 21 just a few years ago.

This performance was enabled by a series of targeted, lower-cost improvements across our refining network, including:

  • Removing small pinch points in refinery systems, called debottlenecking, such as limits in piping, pumps, valves or controls, so more product can move through the refinery
  • Applying risk-based planning to prioritize the most important maintenance during planned shutdowns (turnarounds), helping teams work more efficiently while maintaining safety and reliability
  • Keeping critical crude units running consistently and at full rates, expressed as a utilization percentage (e.g. 100 per cent utilization)
  • Improving plans, processes and equipment needed to manage unexpected disruptions and restore operations quickly

“Thanks to focused efforts, our refineries ran more reliably and more efficiently, consistently delivering multiple quarters of utilization above 100 per cent – making re-rating the logical next step,” says Dave Oldreive, Suncor’s Executive Vice President, Downstream. “We now safely produce more of the refined products that communities, businesses and industries rely on every day.”

The bottom line: Suncor delivered exceptional refining performance, unlocked more capacity from existing assets and turned that outperformance into a higher true operating potential – all while getting more fuel and refined products reaching more people, in more places, where they’re needed most.
