The East Coast of Canada plays an important and strategic role in Suncor Energy’s Exploration and Production business.

East Coast Canada at a glance

The East Coast of Canada plays an important and strategic role in Suncor Energy’s Exploration & Production business. Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, this aspect of our business focuses on high-volume production from four existing offshore fields, interests in future developments and expansions, and exploration drilling for new opportunities in the Atlantic Ocean.

We operate the Terra Nova oil field located on the Grand Banks, 350 kilometres southeast of St. John’s, Nfld. Terra Nova can employ more than 1,200 people when both drilling and production operations are underway.

We hold interests in all current major producing assets

As operator of the Terra Nova field, holding a 48% working interest, we’re focused on running safe, reliable and environmentally responsible operations. As a joint venture partner, we hold a unique position as the only company on the East Coast with an ownership interest in each of the current major oil projects – Hebron, Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose – as well as the Hibernia South Extension and White Rose extensions. Some of these fields are currently under development.

Joint ventures

We have an ownership interest in all the current major oil projects offshore Newfoundland and Labrador, including:

White Rose

We hold a 40% working interest in the White Rose project and approximately 38.6% in the West White Rose project which is expected to extend the life of the field. The extension project will be tied into existing White Rose field infrastructure including the SeaRose Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit. First oil is anticipated from West White Rose in 2026.

Community investment

Nearly 300 Suncor employees are part of the local community and are passionate about giving back to the community where they live and work.

Suncor invests in our local communities by addressing community issues in ways that seek solutions and benefits for all. We show up in our community through the following:

  • Charitable donations: We contribute to charitable organizations and initiatives that align with our community investment funding priorities.
  • Sponsorship: We support non-profit and charitable activities and events that align with our community investment funding priorities and business interests through sponsorships and donations (including donations to organizations that do not have charitable status, but are conducting charitable initiatives), financial assistance, in-kind contributions, product donations, and event sponsorships.

SunCares employee program

Our employees are passionate about giving back to the communities where they live and work, and through this program, we reward volunteer efforts with monetary donations to the employee’s organization of choice.

SunCares enables our East Coast employees to log their volunteer hours and in 2021, we contributed more than 800 hours of volunteer time and supported over 50 community organizations. We also offer a one-to-one match for personal donations made by employees, which in addition to corporate rewards, for their volunteer time, totaling almost $50,000 CDN in 2021.
