Earlier this year, Engineer-in-Training Bailey C. began supporting several upgrader units at Syncrude. As she worked to understand how the units and supporting systems fit together, she spotted an opportunity to improve a process and unlock additional value.
To test the idea safely, Bailey worked with operations, technical and lab teams to develop a test plan, complete hazard assessments and gather the required data.
The results confirmed the concept worked.
The change helped improve flexibility, increase production and reduce costs, showing how fresh eyes and the confidence to ask questions can lead to meaningful improvements.
For Bailey, the project reinforced the importance of collaboration.
For Evan L., Bailey’s leader, the project highlights the importance of empowering employees to share new perspectives and ideas.
Bailey hopes her experience encourages others, especially those early in their careers, to ask questions, learn how things are connected and bring their ideas forward.
