Located approximately 60 kilometers northwest of Fort McMurray, MacKay River was our first in situ facility and the second commercial steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) project ever built.
MacKay River was originally designed to produce 30,000 barrels per day (bpd), but with the introduction of new technologies, it has expanded to 38,000 bpd. The bitumen is transported via pipeline to our Base Plant site for either blending or processing.
The facilities include bitumen/water separation, water treatment and steam generation facilities and typically has approximately 300 people on site each day.
MacKay River includes ten well pads with 125 well pairs either producing or on initial steam injection. A third party owns the on-site cogeneration unit, which Suncor operates. There are also four Once Through Steam Generators (OTSGs) at the site for additional steam generation.
