Funding

Funding decisions are based on established criteria and are aligned with our funding priorities and eligibility guidelines. Applicants are required to review the information below prior to submission. Following receipt of a completed application, decisions may take up to eight weeks to be communicated.

Funding criteria

The following organizations and/or initiatives are ineligible:

• Individuals, and individual pursuits
• Organizations that have a conflict of interest with our business
• Religious and political pursuits
• Debt-reduction campaigns
• Requests for funds post-event to offset budget shortfalls
• Political parties/candidates
• Lobby groups
• Labour organizations
• Private or charter schools
• Private membership-based organizations and service clubs
• Post-secondary student clubs, projects and fraternal organizations
• Community sports associations
• Organizations that have an overdue or incomplete reporting requirement related to any grant previously funding by Suncor

The following donations are ineligible:

• Donations to organizations that hold unrestricted net assets in excess of the organization’s annual expenses, as reflected in the financial statements of the most recent fiscal period.
• A donation of more than 40% of the total annual cost of an organization’s operations and/or initiatives.
• Donations to flow-through organizations that direct funds to other organizations through grants and donations.

Cash or in-kind contributions to charitable or not-for-profit organizations that are located in, or serve, communities where we have established offices and/or operations. This may include event sponsorships led by the charitable or not-for-profit organization.

Sponsorships

A sponsorship involves providing cash or other resources in exchange for recognition. This may include support for a specific event or activity, or sponsorship of the organization as a whole.

Tips for completing an application:

• Provide a clear and detailed description of the funding request, along with any relevant supporting documentation, including a budget (Microsoft Excel format preferred)
• Demonstrate alignment to our focus areas and/or business priorities.
• Clearly outline the recognition benefits offered and describe how Suncor employee engagement may be incorporated.
• Describe how impact and outcomes will be measured and reported, including key metrics or indicators.
• Include audited or reviewed financial statements that demonstrate prudent financial management and responsible stewardship of net assets.
• Allow enough time for the review process, which can take up to eight weeks.
