Community investment in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo

Suncor volunteers stand outdoors in front of a Wood Buffalo Food Bank vehicle, holding reusable tote bags with donated items.

Suncor’s roots run deep in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo. It’s where we launched the company’s first commercial oil sands operation in the 1960s and where our story began. Today, thousands of our employees and their families call the region home and represent about 20 per cent of the population.

By working with local partners, we invest in initiatives that strengthen health and safety, expand access to education and workforce development and support vibrant, connected communities across the region.

Community and culture

Through the Syncrude Food Drive and Radiothon, our support for the local food bank helped raise more than $200,000 and collect over 30,000 pounds of food for families across the region.

This support helps address food insecurity, ensuring individuals and families have reliable access to nutritious food during times of increased need.

Through our partnership with Arts Council Wood Buffalo, Suncor is supporting the creation of an arts incubator in downtown Fort McMurray, providing space for local artists to create, collaborate and grow.

This initiative helps strengthen the region’s cultural sector while creating opportunities for artists to connect with the community and showcase their work.

Our support for Nikinan helped open a new gathering place for 468 First Nation, serving more than 900 members near Anzac and Fort McMurray where Elders, youth and families can connect, share culture and build community. The space supports cultural programming, connection and a strong sense of belonging for future generations.
