Shelly Powell, Senior Vice President, E&P and In Situ, Suncor Energy

Senior Vice President, Exploration & Production and In Situ

Shelley Powell was appointed Senior Vice President, Exploration & Production (E&P) and In Situ in 2021. In this role, she leads all of Suncor’s operated and non-operated in situ, and exploration and production assets in northern Alberta and the East Coast of Canada . Shelley’s organization is also responsible for coordinating Suncor’s strategic objective of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions from oil sands operations by 2050.

Shelley began her Suncor career at the Sarnia Refinery in 1995 as a Process Operator. Since then she has held progressively larger and more complex roles in operations, maintenance, reliability, and process engineering. Shelley’s previous senior leadership roles include Vice President, Extraction; Vice President, Operational Excellence and Technical Services and Vice President, Commerce City Refinery where she oversaw all of Suncor’s U.S. activities. Most recently, Shelley served as Senior Vice President, Base Plant, leading the safe and reliable operation of Suncor’s base plant assets in Fort McMurray.

Shelley is the Chair of the Keyano College Board of Governors, a Member of the Vista Ridge Board of Directors, and a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. She was previously the Chair of the Wood Buffalo Community Foundation. In 2019, she was recognized as one of the “Top 50 Under 50” in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Shelley has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Ottawa and two master’s degrees, one in business administration and a master of science degree in finance, both from the University of Michigan.
